Best Practices 2021
Sustainable use of water
Company: Grupo Paloma
Area: Water use optimization plan
Reason why it started: Own initiative and improvement of profitability.
Summary of the initiative and results: 90% of our greenhouse crops are under a hydroponic system. We have an irrigation system programmed by demand tray (it is only watered when the plant needs it). In addition, we have high-tech programmers, humidity and electrical conductivity probes (SMART WATER POINT) for soil crops. Since 2016 we have carried out the calculation and verification of the Water Footprint, in the last year we have also carried out the Water Footprint. We have reached the calculation of 300 ha of hydroponic tomato, table grape, nectarine and pomegranate cultivation, which represents 30% of the surface. They have been verified according to the Water Footprint Network (WFN) and ISO 14046: 2014 standards respectively. We have five solar plants, three of which are located in our reservoirs. With this, we manage to reduce CO2 emissions from our activity, water evaporation and energy consumption.
Impact of the project: Reduce the use of water, know the variation of its use in our crops over time, allowing us to act on it and reduce water evaporation in reservoirs and CO2 emissions.
Challenges of the project: Continue with this initiative until it is possible to reduce and / or maintain the goals achieved, and to expand the surface of the solar plants.
Communication as a key in the 2020 cherry campaign. Covid-19 scenario.
Company: Cerima Cherries
Reason why it started: Due to the state of pandemic recently declared at that time, the state of alarm forced us to guarantee the safety of our workers, for which a Contingency Plan was drawn up against Covid-19.
Summary of the initiative and results: We draw up a Contingency Plan against Covid-19 where all the necessary measures are found to avoid the contagion and spread of the disease within the processing plant. In addition, special facilities were modified and created to avoid overcrowding, a group was created to clean common areas that were in charge of disinfection of these, a group of personnel controllers was created to guarantee the correct use of personal protection elements and measures of personal hygiene. As a result, no case of Covid-19 was reported, in addition it was possible to operate normally throughout the campaign.
Impact of the project: Through this procedure we provide guarantees and security to the workers that the measures taken by the processing plant were adequate to avoid contagion.
Challenges of the project: Based on what has already been established, certain points of the procedures must be improved. For this season there is much more information and certainties regarding the transmission of the disease, so our improvement efforts will aim to avoid the possible risk factors of contagion and to be able to have an operational campaign without contagion.

Reason why it was started: Failures were detected in the new incorporation processes.
Summary of the initiative and results: Explain the welcome plan and not just deliver an informational document.
Impact of the project: Improvement in the process of new incorporations.
Project challenges: Reduce the failures of newly hired workers and give them security.
Best Practices 2020
Best practices against Covid-19 in your company
Area: Murcia Agriculture
Reason why it started: As a result of the appearance of Covid-19 and the unawareness of all the participants.
Summary of the initiative and results: Positive result as it helped us keep our workers safe from the pandemic.
Impact of the project: It had a high impact, thanks to all the contributions of the Forums and the Working Groups.
Challenges of the project: Face and seek solutions to an unknown situation.
Path to wellness: Stretching during the working day
Company: Frutas Poveda
Area: Quality Department and Human Resources Department
Reason why it was started: To favour the reduction of injuries in the packaging area of the warehouse, where physical fatigue is a factor to take into account in the occupational health of workers.
Summary of the initiative and results: Stop for 6-8 minutes every 4 hours of continuous work, thus finding a benefit for the workers (physical and mental well-being) = Improved quality of work, and long-term benefits in the company (improving work performance, lower percentage of injuries and low economic cost).
Impact of the project: Improvement of the work quality of the workers and benefits in the short and long term of the company’s work performance.
Project challenges: Greater individualization in each of the workers and their involvement in future measures and improvement of the system.

"Housing Table" Project
Company: Cooperative Coprohnijar & ONG CEPAIM
Reason why it was started: Need for access to affordable housing in the Níjar region
Summary of the initiative and results: Interdisciplinary community space with multiple interest groups represented in search of solutions for the eradication of settlements in the Region. Participation in the Municipal Housing Plan, pilot project for action in settlements, request for emergency aid for settlements
Project impact: Integration of interested parties in search of a common goal.
Project challenges: Medium-long-term solution to the slums and access to decent conditions
Work - Life Balance
Company: Sun Salads Spain
Area: Technical departments (trained personnel) and field (personnel with basic training)
Reason it started: Generalized demotivation
Summary of the initiative and results: The possibility of readjustments in the company’s system was valued, and in the long run a motivational benefit for our work team has been obtained.
Project impact: Greater involvement of the workers, due to their own motivation, improving the performance and efficiency of the different tasks.
Project challenges: Try to keep the lines drawn and carry out and / or incorporate new actions if necessary.
Holding internal employee forums inspired by the Ethical Trade Forums

Reason why it was started: Improve the integration of migrants in the Odemira territory
Summary of the initiative and results: Have support for the equal process of our workers. Promote alliances with other companies and social actors in the region. Improve the supply of training, accommodation and facilities.
Project impact: Very positive feedback that helped define investment projections for Capex 2019.
Project challenges: Execution of Capex projects for well-being.
